Who is the "real" person behind the enigmatic artist
we know as Lady GaGa?
Lady GaGa was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta
to Internet entrepreneur parents on March 28th 1986 in New York City.
(She’s of Italian descent.) She was a child protégée, learning to play the
piano by ear at the ripe age of four. GaGa begun composing her own music
by the time she was 13 and started performing at open mic nights at the
age of 14.
She attended a private Catholic school in New York City alongside with
Paris and Nicky Hilton. While working with a vocal coach and studying
classical piano, Lady GaGa performed in her high school’s rock band.
Her artistic accomplishments earned her a rare, early admission to the New
York University's Tisch School of the Arts from which she’s dropped out at
19 to pursue music career full time. She’s worked as a waitress, danced in
clubs and sung in bars at night designing her stage costumes during the
day.
Her first record deal with Island Def Jam fell through, but still Lady
GaGa managed to land a contract with Interscope by her 20th birthday. Her
first single "Just Dance" landed her at the number one spot of Billboard's
Hot 100 list.
But she’s first and foremost a consummate artist that consistently
“produces” hits. A string of three number one hits ("Just Dance", "Poker
Face", and "LoveGame") on her debut album, made her a phenomenon of sorts
and only the third artist in history to boast of such an achievement.
At the 2010 Grammy’s GaGa scored an award for best dance recording and an
award for best electronic dance recording. Shortly after the Grammy’s
another of her songs "Bad Romance" reached the top of the charts, her 5th
number one hit.
At the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2010 GaGa received an
astonishing EIGHT awards, which included the Video of the Year Award for
"Bad Romance".
All the while, her eccentric costumes generate nearly as much attention as
her music and performances.....
There is no doubt that Lady GaGa is a talented and prolific artist but
what’s equally impressive is her hard work. On her latest tour she’s
performed 138 shows…… (Oh yes, and somewhere in between - in the early
stages of her career - she’s penned several songs for Brittney Spears whom
she holds in high regard.) The Enigma of Lady GaGa is her stage persona.
In reality, the story of Lady GaGa isn’t that of Cinderalla made by a
prince or a lucky coincidence, but of a powerful artist who’s made her own
way to the top.
With the "Enigma" of Lady Gaga explored above, her
own words paint an interesting picture of her.
"I love Dolce & Gabbana. I love Versace. I love the
crazy, more eccentric stuff. I can't pay my rent, but I'm f---ing
gorgeous." (She sounds like a committed "fashionista"...)
"I dropped out of NYU, moved out of my parent's house, got my own place,
and survived on my own. I made music and worked my way from the bottom up.
I didn't know somebody, who knew somebody, who knew somebody. If I have
any advice to anybody, it's to just do it yourself, and don't waste time
trying to get a favor." (That's an advice we respect, admire and know to
be correct based on our own experiences.)
"Writing a record is like dating a few men at once. You take them to the
same restaurants to see if they measure up, and at some point you decide
who you like best. When you make music or write or create, it's really
your job to have mind-blowing, irresponsible, condomless sex with whatever
idea it is you're writing about at the time." (True, deep and insightful
description of the creative process.)
"You must never ever let a guy know how much you like him, because then
he'll run in the other direction ... Well, I just sign that when you don't
play hard to get, if you're too easy or you come off too eager, they run
away so you gotta keep your pokerface on." (We wonder whether Lady Gaga is
a poker player. If so, she must be a good one!)
